Output to Screen, Print and the .ttn File Format

Screen output is at the maximum resolution of your monitor no matter the size or resolution.  Using advanced 3D pixel modelling derived from landscape terrain rendering algorithms Tartan Designer renders woven cloth at realisms previously unachievable.  This is currently under further development and future version updates will be available for download at no charge to registered users.

All tartans - from the STWR register or your own or other designs - can be viewed and printed or saved as .ttn format files.

.ttn file format

We developed the .ttn file format for use with the original Tartan Generator in 1999.  The .ttn format is essentially a text file containing control information and is typically under 10KB in size.  This enables designs to be emailed or downloaded with ease and contains all the information Tartan Designer or Tartan Viewer requires to render a full resolution image to the end viewer.  Designs can be sent to a client together with a download link to Tartan Viewer.  Tartan Viewer is a completely free download and once installed will render a .ttn file simply by double clicking the .ttn file.  The .ttn file contains all information including the sett, thread counts, colour information and notes.  We have released the full technical specification of the .ttn format as open source allowing third party developers to use the standard - click here for a white paper on the specification.  It is also completely backward compatible with designs created using the original Tartan Generator and Tartan Viewer will render these using the Modern colour pallet.  If the .ttn file is created using Tartan Designer then the specific colour swatch used to create the file will be used.
